Screeding
LG Brickwork & Drives | Professional Screeding
What is screed flooring?
Screed flooring, often confused with concrete, is a thin layer of sharp sand and cement applied over a base floor. In homes, screed flooring is used for levelling uneven floor structures. However, in industrial settings where scuffs are expected, coarse aggregates can be added to create a thicker layer. Screed flooring works to provide a robust and durable foundation for the top layer of your flooring. In addition, it conceals pipes, heating and other underfloor systems.
What types of screeding are there?
Certain types of screed cannot be applied to some floors or in some environments. Therefore, you need to know what kind of flooring screed will work best for you. There are three main types of screeding, and which one you choose will depend on the type of base being used for the application.
The three types of screed flooring are:
- Bonded Screed Flooring
Bonded screed flooring is applied directly to the concrete base. This type of screed flooring is ‘bonded’ to the base using a bonding agent. It is often used in environments, such as within the industrial sector, where heavy loads are expected. - Unbonded Screed Flooring
Unbonded screed flooring can be applied on top of a damp-proof membrane. This means that the screed has been installed over the top of concrete, but not stuck using an adhesive. As it isn’t bonded, the likelihood of settlement and shrinkage is significantly reduced. - Floating Screed Flooring
Floating screed flooring is typically used when underfloor heating has been installed. Additionally, it can be used in settings where acoustic or thermal insulation is needed and requires a thicker layer than other types of floor screed.
how thick should screed flooring be?
The ideal thickness of sand and cement bonded screed is 25–40mm, an unbonded screed should have a minimum thickness of 50mm, whilst a floating screed should have a thickness greater than 65mm for lightly loaded floors and 75mm for more heavily loaded floors.
